Part 14: Festival Day.

Mitch is having a dream. Or maybe it is more than a dream.

He is standing on a windy mountain plateau. A big gate is closing down.

Above his head creatures are swooping in and out, fighting each other. Then somebody pulls him to the ground and something impacts behind him. If he looks up he sees Toar the soldier standing over him. Toar reaches out and pushes on Mitch’s chest. Mitch sees the nice clothes he was suddenly wearing change to his armor.

But he doesn’t get much time to think about it when Toar drags him over to a broken catapult. Mitch fixes it and gets the command to help in the air battle. With a well-placed shot he shoots one of the enemy creatures. The creature tumbles on the plateau where Mitch and other soldiers are standing. Mitch keeps shooting it with the catapult and together with the soldiers he manages to kill the beast. And just before he awakes, Toar looks at him an Mitch sees Toar’s eyes light up to an almost unbearable brightness. He hears Toar ask him if he deems it wise to take his enemy into the mountain.

Maxwell also has a very vivid deam.

He is standing in a forest. Mist obscures most of the surrounding. Then out of the mist a ghostly form of a pregnant women appears. She seems to be running from soldiers who are hunting her. Suddenly a giant green snake appears next to Maxwell and commands him to guard the unborn child. She urges him to stop the soldiers. Maxwell runs in to protect the woman who is about to get killed.

He kills all the soldiers and when he approaches the woman she raises her head and he sees that it is Kat.

It is festival day and Dagar has risen early to mentally prepare for the ceremony of the Light. When he walks down the stairs Cyra stand ready with the white lamb. After she has given the lamb to Dagar she hurries out of the house.

Mitch still remembers his dream vividly and instead of his normal clothes dons his armor. Then he tries the same as Toar did in his dream and the armor changes to some very fancy clothes. When he gets downstairs Cyra is waiting for him. She has a stern conversation with Mitch about Kat. Mitch promises Cyra that he will propose later that night.

Most of the villagers are ready when Dagar steps outside and up on a table to oversee the crowd. He decides to wait as he doesn’t see his friends and give the late comers some time to arrive. Then it’s time to find the boy and girl of honor. When Dagar has chosen he presents the girl with a white mantel and the lamb and the boy with a horn so he can signal in Kronor’s eve.

The girl brings the Lamb followed by the villagers to the butcher where Dagar presents him with a special knife. The lamb gets offered and then slaughtered for the evening feast.

At long tables in the middle of the village a big breakfast is setup and when the villagers get back from the offering, Dagar tells them to dig in. While everybody starts to eat Dagar notices that Ashera still hasn’t been seen.

Ashera is worrying sick. She keeps patrolling the village thinking that an attack is imminent, reliving the horror of her dream of waking up in flames. It worries her so much that she doesn’t feel like joining the feast. During breakfast the Grand Duke keeps making remarks how the royal court does things much better. Royal Chamberlain Pascale says that he needs to go to the monastery for business and that he needs three horses. Dagar asks Mitch to provide the horses. Because Pascale finds things go too slow and starts making remarks, Mitch decides in the moment to saddle the worst horses he has in his stable. While Pascale makes his exit, Mitch quickly saddles some fresh horses. Mitch informs Dagar of his plan of following the Chamberlain. When Dagar says he wants to join, Cyra stops him and tells Dagar that he absolutely can’t leave.

Mitch tries to find Ashera but fails. Together with Maxwell he wants to leave when he is stopped at the gate by a soldier. With the help of Boris they sneak past the soldier and ride out to follow the chamberlain. But they have to halt their pursuit when one of the horses Mitch provided the chamberlain gets a limb. One of the soldiers who is with the chamberlain returns to the village. This forces Mitch and Maxwell to make a detour. That is when they lose the chamberlain who after investigation also hasn’t arrived at the monastery. When they return back to the village they stumble upon Ashera who is annoyed that she wasn’t brought along.

After breakfast it is custom to settle taxes with the mayor and so Dagar and Cyra are busy the rest of the morning with collecting taxes.

Maxwell is enjoying the company of prince Harrol. Mitch uses the rest of the afternoon to study his book. And Ashera keeps worrying and patrolling the village and surrounding area with Timor.

Later in the afternoon she gets Mitch so far and come with her to the Mountain to see if they can see an army or anything at all. But checking the whole landscape from the Crowsnest they don’t see anything suspicious.

At dusk the boy announces with a blast on the horn that Kronor Eve has started. A barrel of Kronor’s beer is opened and Dagar opens the evening with a toast.

The rest of the evening they feast with good food, good beer and good company. Even Ashera joins in. Prince Harrol tries to get Cyra drunk. Mitch keeps an eye on Kat after Maxwell tells his disturbing dream.

But when Pascale gets back in the village, everybody is alert again and keeps an eye on him. Seeing that Pascale has returned and still worrying that an attack will come, Ashera decides to steal Kronor’s horn from a case in Dagar’s house. Mitch sort of proposes to Kat. And Kat accepts. Dagar rescues a drunken Cyra out of the arms of Harrol and drags her to their house where he drops her in the bathroom. The night has fallen, villagers are off to bed after a nice festival and everybody is making up for a new day.

That night Dagar has a reoccurring dream but this time the dreams reveals something extra. Something about Cyra’s heritage.
